Regardless of its merits the 1999 series, in 2018, is a terrible way to introduce someone to Hunter X Hunter. It drops off way earlier, leaving many of the series' most iconic moments unadapted and the slow pace will likely be a massive turnoff to anyone born after ~1996.
I believe the Killua character that I was introduced to in 1999 version was a significantly deeper, darker, dynamic and enlightened character than the 2011 version (thus the manga as well). Filler or not. I think the same goes for Gon in a lesser extent, but regardless, I felt much less attached to Killua in the 2011 version because the
same level of violence and gore Actually this was one of my biggest complaint about the new one. The new one is less graphically violent imo. Case in point: Killua vs. Jones 1999. 2011. Killua was straight up heartless in the 1999 (and the original manga) for this part, where as he seems much less evil / more playful in the 2011 remake.
The 1999 version has darker colors, the pacing is slower and has a very few filler moments whereas the 2011 anime is recent, very colorful, less mature at the beginning but it changed through the course of it. 1999 has some filler while 2011 has some parts missing, such as Kon (that bear cub) and Kite in the beginning.
I disagree, the 1999 version blows the 2011 version out of the water when it comes to choreography. Just look at the two fights, the 2011 makes rampant use of speed lines and can't even maintain backgrounds. 1999 version Killua feels more like Illumo's little brother. I think the way he's drawn in some scenes really mirror Illumi whereas 2011 they look nothing alike. Yeah, I prefer 1999 version, also the style is more similar to Togashi's. Me too!

Most fans agree that the second attempt turned out much better than the original.Hunter x Hunter (1999) Watch Order Since the 2011 Hunter x Hunter anime is a reboot, the two available versions share the same storyline but differ in animation design. For example, the OVAs It's one scene where 1999 is particularly good and 2011 isn't. It isn't really a representative comparison of the entire shows. The 2011 Chrollo vs Zeno/Silva fight doesn't even compare particularly well against the rest of its own show. I'm not trying to say one is better than the other.
